21 Chilling Facts About The Deep Web (Dark Web)

The Dark Web is full of abnormalities and nightmares, today we are going to uncover 21 of the strangest facts about the Dark Web. If you have any other strange facts about the Dark Web, drop a comment below and I will try to incorporate it into a future post!

1.) The Dark Web was almost 100% funded by the U.S Government

Three national security agencies in the USA funded 99% of the TOR Project. TOR - or "The Onion Router" is what Dark Web users employ in order to stay completely anonymous on the Dark Web. The US Navy, the state department, and the BBG together funded 99% of The Tor Project (TOR). This leaves many TOR users worrying and questioning their true anonymity. This page does a great job of uncovering the secrets that The Onion Router holds.

2.) Many Brick and Mortar shops utilize Bitcoin

You've probably seen at least one little Bitcoin sticker hidden at your local Subway, or Dominos. With the recent media coverage of Bitcoin, many Brick and Mortar shops are taking lead and allowing customers to pay in cryptocurrency!

3.) Death Grips released an album exclusively onto the Dark Web

Death Grips has always been a very experimental group in the music industry. The album pictured below (titled "No Love Deep Web") landed them many mentions in Reddit forums and caused the Dark Web community to hold an interest in what they do and say. This picture is the iTunes censored version of the album cover. The Uncensored Image is a picture of someones erect dick with the words "No Love Deep Web" written up the shaft in sharpie.

4.) Nearly 600,000 facebook accounts are hacked every day

This number may seem alarming at first, but Facebook has more than 1.8 billion users, meaning that .33% of the Facebook community is hacked daily (which is still a scary thought).

5.) More than 96% of the internet is not accessible by search engines like google or bing

While surface web search engines can grab some disturbing pages, their web crawlers don't dare touch the Dark Web. Dark Web websites are found using search engines on the Dark Web. Torch and Duck Duck Go are good places to start if you're looking to explore the Dark Web.

6.) The Deep Web and the Dark Web are two VERY different places

Average internet users utilize the Deep Web every day and don't even realize it! Any secure sites that hold personal data such as usernames, passwords, or emails are subjected to the deep web since other users cant openly view the same data as you. The Dark Web, however, is only accessible with the help of VPNs and extra software like Tor or i2p. The Dark Web is considered part of the Deep Web, and because of this, there seems to be a lot of confusion. Many people believe the Deep Web and Dark Web are the exact same thing, and they CAN be correct in a sense, but the two are definitely not synonyms.

7.) Facebook has a Dark Web domain with over 1,000,000 monthly users

This version of Facebook isn't anything insane. There are still rules and restrictions, only now you can access Facebook through the Dark Web!

8.) The original Sad Satan had no viruses or gore

Sad Satan is a Dark Web game notorious for the odd gameplay, and sinister pop-ups. This game has a very... different way of introducing itself to the world and it was so intriguing that I created a post dedicated entirely to Sad Satan. The original game was uploaded to

9.) It is NOT illegal to access the Deep Web or Dark Web

While certain sites on the Dark Web are definitely risky, just viewing them alone will not be enough to compromise your phone or PC. The real trouble comes into play when you spend money on the Dark Web or indulge in illegal acts online.

10.) Many Dark Web marketplaces have switched from Bitcoin to more stable currencies such as Ether or Ripple

Due to the constant fluctuation of Bitcoins value, its popularity amongst Dark Web marketplaces has begun to diminish. In its place rise smaller - more stable - cryptocurrencies such as Ripple (XRP), and Ether (ETH).

11.) More than 30,000 websites are hacked on the Deep Web every day

Many of the websites hacked have been inactive for years, and don't cause much damage but hackers are actively looking for websites with traffic and low security. Once they acquire these websites they can do one of two things.
1. The hacker will delete all posts off of the website and blackmail the original owner with the website for money or publicity
2. The hacker may just want to cause chaos or hate the meaning of the website (if the website covers a controversial topic like abortion or politics).

12.) More than 550 billion documents reside on the Dark Web

These documents could hold anything within them, and on the Dark Web, anything truly does mean anything. You might stumble across a page dedicated to the benefits of having AIDS, or a list of newly hacked emails.

13.) Your information is only worth about $1,200 on the Dark Web

Your body on the Dark Web is worth well over $1,200. According to Seeker, if you could harvest every organ and chemical in your body, you could make a cool $45M! Your online accounts, however, can only make you roughly $1,200 dollars.

14.) 18 people are affected by cybercrime every second

These cyber crimes could range anywhere from cyberbullying to hacking personal webcams. If there is one thing I want my viewers to take away from this article, its to put tape over your webcam! You can always take the tape off if you want to use your camera. Even Mark Zuckerberg puts tape over his webcam!

15.) The first recorded Bitcoin transaction was for two pizzas costing 10,000 Bitcoins. Today that would be worth 75 million dollars

Yep... I bet they regretted that purchase.

16.) The average cost to repair a spear phishing attack is 1,600,000 million dollars

Spear phishing is a scam in which the scammer will send out millions of emails to different recipients in hopes that someone will click their link. After the victim falls for it, the scammer will scrape for any personal data he or she can find. This tactic is often used against larger corporations that hold users personal data. According to Barracuda, even tech giants like Facebook and Google were tricked into giving away $100,000,000!

17.) More than 4,000 ransomware attacks occur every day

18.) 100 Emails and passwords only amount to roughly $2.50

Email accounts and passwords are sold for so cheap on the Dark Web because many of these accounts are either terminated, or the original user changed the password again.

19.) 71% of new social media accounts created are spam

Social media platforms are being used as a free marketing place, and because of how easy most social media apps make it to create new accounts, many people decide to create fake profiles (bots) that they then force to like all of their pictures. This tactic is only effective if you know what you're doing... But please just grow your followers naturally, it's so much more enjoyable.

20.) One in two unaware webcams can be hacked

For your own safety, if you ever decide to explore the dark web please cover your webcam with tape. Black electrical tape appears almost invisible on most laptops or computers.

21.) You can make money spreading viruses created on the dark web using Tox

I will not be handing this URL out to anyone who asks, but it does exist (as of 6/5/18). Tox is such a simple concept and could destroy so many machines. There are three basic steps to building your virus:
1.  Decide how much you wish the victim to pay for their computer to be unlocked
2. Enter the reason why you've decided to support Tox
3. Answer a quick captcha to prove you're not a robot
